How to Hook Up a Trailer in 8 Easy Steps

Before we go over how to hook up a trailer, we highly suggest you reference your owner’s manual for more information on your vehicle or heavy-duty truck’s towing capacity and specifications. You don’t want to tow a trailer that’s too heavy for your ride. Additionally, you’ll need an additional person there to assist you with attaching the trailer to your truck. However, if you’re in a RAM heavy duty, you can likely tackle this task alone thanks to its advanced towing technology. Without further ado, here’s how to hook up a trailer in eight easy steps:

  1. Before you attach the trailer to your heavy-duty truck, make sure that the trailer is secure and add wheel chocks if needed.
  2. Adjust the trailer jack to ensure that the receiver is high enough to clear your hitch.
  3. If you have a RAM heavy duty, you can do this step yourself. Otherwise, with the help of another person, back your truck up so that the hitch is perfectly aligned with the trailer receiver.
  4. In your RAM heavy duty, you can activate the bed lowering mode to lower the receiver onto your hitch. If you’re in a truck that doesn’t have this function, you’ll want the assistance of another person to manually lower the receiver onto the hitch.
  5. Once the hitch and receiver are connected, secure the safety latch, add the safety pin, hook up and cross the safety chains, and connect the breakaway safety cable. Make sure you follow this step carefully to ensure that the trailer is firmly attached.
  6. Connect the trailer wiring to your truck. If you’re in a new RAM heavy duty, you can confirm on the infotainment screen that a trailer has been attached.
  7. Turn on safety hazards and confirm that the trailer lighting is working as intended.
  8. Finally, remove the wheel chocks and secure the trailer jacks. You’re now ready to begin towing your trailer around New Lenox!

Keep in mind that these steps can vary depending on your specific truck, trailer, or towing accessories. While towing with a regular truck is simple, it’s evident that with a RAM heavy-duty truck, you’ll have an even easier time connecting and towing a trailer because of the high-level towing features that it provides. If you’re not familiar with the exact towing accessories you need, you can stop by our parts center for more information.
